Capacity and compactness are separate constraints. A chair can use a modest caster base yet have a seat that is too wide, too deep, or wrong for the user’s leg length. Published weight capacity is a minimum gate, not proof of fit or comfort.

Correcting the former recommendation

The old article called Aeron Size C compact. Herman Miller identifies Size C as the large model, with an 18.5-inch seat depth and a substantially larger silhouette. That premise was wrong and has been removed.

How we chose

We checked current manufacturer specification and fit pages on September 11, 2026. We compared warranted weight, seat depth, seat height, overall width, base diameter, arm range, and fit guidance. Where Herman Miller’s current pages show different capacity figures by configuration, the buyer should use the exact product page and warranty supplied with the chair.

Aeron Size A: compact only when the fit chart agrees

Herman Miller lists Size A as the smallest Aeron and rates it to 300 pounds. Its 26.5-inch base is compact for this capacity class, but the manufacturer positions it for smaller bodies. A person near the maximum rating should not choose it solely to save floor space.

Aeron Size B: better broad-range fit

Size B uses the same listed base diameter on the retail page but a larger seat and broader fit range. It is the more defensible Aeron starting point for many users, subject to the current size chart.

Aeron Size C: capacity-led, not compact

Size C provides the deepest and largest seat. It belongs on a capacity-and-fit shortlist, but it directly contradicts a “compact chair” requirement.

Fit checks

  • Leave two to three finger widths behind the knees.
  • Confirm feet rest flat through the required seat-height range.
  • Measure chair width with arms, not just the caster base.
  • Include dynamic movement and accessories in the load requirement.
  • Use the current manufacturer’s fit chart and warranty, not a marketplace title.

Verdict

Size A is the compact 300-pound Aeron only for users who fit its intended range. Size B is the broader starting point. Size C is the larger high-capacity option and should never be sold as compact.
